Speech Communication Course Offerings

 

SPCH 1 INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC SPEAKING

3 units LG-C/NC Three hours lecture

Organization and oral presentation of ideas and the development of skills in effective methods of delivery. Develops ability to communicate ideas with confidence and poise. Recommended for students in business, education, law, government, politics, sales, and the many other fields requiring speeches. (CAN SPCH 4)

Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 1A

SPCH 2 SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION

3 units LG-C/NC Three hours lecture

Explores through theory and practice the ways people communicate in learning and problem- solving discussions. Will consider how and why groups form, managing conflict, and developing leadership skills.

SPCH 3 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

3 units LG-C/NC Three hours lecture

Designed to increase communication knowledge and skills relevant to interpersonal relationships.  Topics: self-concept, perception, listening, managing emotions, and conflict resolution.

SPCH 4 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

3 units LG-C/NC Three hours lecture

Explores the dynamics of communication as it applies to the American culture, subcultures, and various international cultures. Emphasis on direct experience and the development and skill in intercultural interactions.

SPCH 6 ARGUMENTATION

3 units LG-C/NC Three hours lecture

Focuses on the fundamentals of argumentation and debate. Students will consider how to explore a problem, select evidence, build both an affirmative and negative case, demonstrate an understanding of refutation principles, and speak effectively before an informed audience.

Prerequisite: Speech 1
Credit transferable: CSU

 

SPCH 54 LEADERSHIP

3 units LG-C/NC Three hours lecture

This course is designed to assist students interested in developing or improving communication skills relevant to leadership.  Theories of leadership will be investigated, and students will learn how to apply both knowledge and skills to diverse small group and public speaking situations. Students will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained outside of class. Campus and/or community involvement is a required element of this course.
